Fire Retardant Treatments
All John Brash & Company Ltd timbers are available pre-treated with highly effective fire retardant technology. Each treatment meets the very stringent British Standards.
Treatment for Scaffold Boards
For flame retardant treatment, where the use or storage is external with exposure
to direct wetting, John Brash recommends Non Com Exterior® for scaffold boards.
This is resin based and non-leachable in wet conditions.
Another suitable flame-retardant treatment that is recommended for less severe
external use is Dricon®. The use of both of these treatments is supported by
the NASC (National Access & Scaffolding Confederation) in its Technical Guidance
note TG10:02 Fire Retardant Treatments for Timber Scaffold Boards and Battens.

Treatment for Shingles and Shakes
John Brash & Company Ltd offers FRT Exterior® shingles and shakes. FRT Exterior®
is a treatment manufactured by Chemco Inc, America's leading manufacturer of fire
retardants for cedar shingles and shakes.
FRT Exterior® is a full-cell pressure treatment process which, using a safe and
non-toxic chemical, makes the wood fire-resistant for life. This treatment meets
BS 476, Part 3: 1958 giving a double AA rating, and BS 476: Part 7: 1971 giving
a Class 1 Surface Spread of Flame. It is the only treatment that, when slightly
modified, can meet the even more stringent requirement to give a Class 0 Surface
Spread of Flame. The treatment is the only one to pass the UL-700 10-year natural
weathering tests, and also impairs the development of surface mould and fungal
spores. Additionally it provides resistance to insect attack. Bundles of Cedar
shingles and shakes and packed cladding boards are labelled by John Brash &
Co Ltd ensuring proof of treatment. Regular inspections and tests are carried
out to ensure conformance.
