Eastern White Cedar Shingles

Overview

Eastern White Cedar has for many years been the timber of choice for manufacturing Singles in Eastern Canada and the USA.  Also known as Northern Whire Cedar or White Cedar, Thuja Occidentalis is a consistent light or pale brown colour that bleaches naturally over time to give a distinctive silver grey 'New England' look.  It has a fine even grain, low density and light weight making it easier to work with.  Eastern White Cedar also has a distinctive spicy aroma.

Use and Timber Treatment

Most typically used for external wall cladding, Eastern White Cedar Shingles can be used untreated giving an expected service life of 25-30 years.  They can, if requited be painted or stained.  They are resistant to frost and have a higher resistance to shock than Western Red Cedar.

Eastern White Cedar Shingles should be treated for all roofing applications, where the roof pitch isabove 14 degrees, to give maximum durability in the UK's climate.  When treated with Osmose NauurewoodŽ a service life in excess of 40 years is expected.

If building regulations require, Eastern White Cedar Shingles can be treated with fire retardant to give a class 1 or a class 0 surface spread of flame to BS476:Part 7:1971 or a 'AA' rating to BS476:Part 3:1958.

Grades

Eastern White Cedar Shingles are available in several gardes.  John Brash only import the top grade referred to as 'Grade A (Extra) Blue Label'.  This is a premium quality shingle with no imperfections and is made from 100% cleara and 100% heartwood.

They are taper sawn and have a relatively smooth face and back.  The shingles are 400mm (16") long, approximately 10mm thick at the butt, tapering to 2-3mm at the tip.
